Visa has announced an enhanced version of its A2A Protect service. The upgrade delivers real-time risk insights designed to help banks stop account-to-account fraud before money leaves a customer's account.

The core enhancement is a new unified fraud score. This score integrates Featurespace's technology, providing financial institutions with faster and clearer signals. The goal is to detect more fraudulent transactions while reducing unnecessary alerts. James Mirfin, Head of Risk and Security Solutions at Visa, stated that fraudsters move quickly across payment types, and institutions need equally fast risk insights. "A2A Protect combines Visa’s network expertise with Featurespace’s technology to deliver a powerful new layer of protection," he said.

The Need for Speed in A2A Payments

Account-to-account payments are accelerating globally. According to the source report, A2A transactions are projected to surpass 5.8 trillion by 2028. This represents a 160% increase from 2024. As volume grows, so does the fraud threat. The enhanced A2A Protect solution uses advanced AI and transfer learning. It gives banks immediate access to global risk insights without a long wait. Banks do not need to wait months for models to learn from their own transaction data. They also do not need to wait for other banks to join a consortium. Visa claims the service delivers value from day one.

Network-Level Intelligence and Performance

Banks that opt in can incorporate additional network-level signals. These signals enhance detection of emerging threats that operate across the entire payment ecosystem. For participating institutions, A2A Protect highlights emerging scam hotspots and coordinated fraud activity. These are insights that might be difficult for a single bank to detect alone. This shared intelligence helps the wider ecosystem respond faster to new threats. It provides a more complete and early view of risk, aiming to identify scams before transaction authorization. Visa states that A2A Protect has been shown to increase fraud detection by 75% in the first six months of deployment.

Implementation and Operational Benefits

The service integrates with a bank's existing systems through a single API. This approach is intended to reduce implementation time and complexity. Each fraud alert generated by the system includes a plain language explanation. The explanation details why a transaction was flagged. Visa says this helps fraud teams act quickly and confidently. It also aims to prevent the disruption of transactions from genuine customers.

The enhanced A2A Protect represents a shift towards pre-emptive fraud control in the fast-moving world of direct bank transfers.
